Kepong Metropolitan Park

On any given evening, the Kepong Metropolitan Park is a popular spot for kite-flying because it was purpose-built to accommodate such activity. The field, which runs parallel to the main road, had its trees removed to ensure a 100m-clearance for kites to be launched.

The expansive park spanning 95 hectares houses a 57-hectare lake that used to attract recreational anglers (fishing was prohibited from 2012 onwards). But park visitors can take to other amenities such as the remote-control car track, a jogging and cycling track, a reflexology facility, as well as a football field.

Forest Research Institute Malaysia

Kepong residents are very proud of playing host to reputedly the world’s oldest and largest re-created tropical rainforest that is the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).

FRIM is a statutory governmental agency under the Ministry of Land, Water and Natural Resources. It is tasked with promoting sustainable management and optimal use of forest resources in the country. It was gazetted under the National Heritage Act 2005 as a Natural Heritage in 2009.

Visitors may go trekking at several Nature Trails, set up camp at the Perah Campsite or picnic at Sungai Kroh. The arboretum, a repository of living plants that house at least 354 species of plants, promises an educational experience like no other.

Whilst in the forest, be sure to look up towards the treetops and keep an eye out for a spell-binding display of crown shyness where leaves from one tree seem to shy away from touching those from another.

Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve

If one is still not convinced that living in a condo in Kepong affords greater intimacy with verdant surroundings, look no further than the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve, that serves as a buffer for the conservation of the 544-hectare FRIM campus. It is one of the last wildlife corridors that connect to the Templer and Kanching recreational forests, which are part of the Selangor State Parks.

The Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve houses a pristine waterfall, which also acts as a pivotal water catchment zone supplying water to the surrounding area. It is also the home of the nearby Orang Asli community.

Kepong: A City of Nature
